In 2017, Naag Panchami will be commemorated on 27th of July. Naag Panchami and Kaal Sarp Dosha are interconnected with each other. According to the Hindu Astrology, the day of Naag Panchami is considered very auspicious for Kaal Sarp Dosha Puja. Kaal Sarp Dosha persists in one’s kundali when all the planets rest in the Rahu and Ketu axis. This dosha causes adverse effects and performing Kaal Sarp Dosha Puja on this day renders one to get rid of it.
The Vedic scriptures of Mahabharat elucidates the story of Janamejeya, whose father King Parikshit died by the venomous bite of a snake named Taksaka. In extreme indignation, Janamejeya decided to kill all the snakes around the world. He asked the priests to perform a sacrificial fire(yagna) and all the snakes except Taksaka were dragged to the fire. When the priests strengthened the fire, then Taksaka who was hiding in the heavenly place of King Indra was too drawn along with King Indra. Then, the Gods in extreme agony went to Goddess Mansa Devi to unravel the matter. Getting apprised with the situation, Mansa Devi asked her son Astika to tranquilize the situation by conciliating Janamejeya. King Janamejeya was startled by the spiritual enlightenment which Astika gave him. Astika asked a boon from the king and consequently, King Janamejeya decided to give up his revenge and asked the priests to stop the fire. Hence, this day is signified as a significant day as all the snakes got their life back. Thus, snakes are worshiped on this day by the Hindus.
