In parts of Northern India, the process of Guna Milan is known as Ashtakoot Milan, which defines the eight aspects of Gunas. The meaning of ‘Ashta’ is ‘eight’ and the meaning of ‘koota’ is ‘aspects’. There are eight Kootas which are as follows along with the point they contain:
Varna is the first aspect among the eighth Kootas in marriage matching. It shows the spiritual compatibility of man and woman along with their ego levels. It is classified into four categories, namely Brahmins, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra.
Vasya is the second aspect among the eighth Kootas and represents mutual attraction and power between married couples. A person is defined into 5 categories, such as Manav/Nara (human beings), Vanchar (wild animals), Chatushpad (small animals), Jalchar (sea animals), and Keeta/Keet (insects).
Tara is the third aspect among the eighth Kootas in marriage matching. It calculates the compatibility between birth star or nakshatras. There are 27 birth stars (Nakshatra) in astrology.
Yoni is the fourth aspect among the eighth Kootas and calculates sexual compatibility, intimacy level, and mutual understanding between the couple. This guna is classified into 14 animals, which are Elephant, Snake, Mongoose, Cow, Lion, Hare/Deer, Horse, Dog, Cat, Rat, Buffalo, Sheep, Tiger, and Monkey.
Graha Maitri is the fifth aspect among the eighth Kootas in Kundli Milan. It represents moon sign compatibility, mental compatibility, and natural friendship.
Graha Maitri is the sixth aspect among the eighth Kootas in Kundli Milan. It is related to behavioural compatibility. Nakshatras (birth stars) are classified into three categories- Deva (God, representing Satwa Guna), Manava (Human beings, representing Rajo Guna) and Rakshasa (Demon, representing Tamo Guna).

It is truly believed that each point or ‘Guna’ has a special significance associated with it and the sum of all these eight ashtakoota is significant in analysing a happy married life. For a couple to lead a happy marital life, it is said that 18 gunas should match with each other. If the matching gunas are above 27, then the match is considered to be suitable for marriage. But, if the sum of the matching gunas is or less than 18, then marriage is not advised.
There is another thing that the astrologer needs to keep in mind while calculating the gunas (Marriage Matching) is the presence of Manglik Dosha (evil effects of the planet Mars), Kaal Sarp Dosha (when all the planets are gathered in between Rahu and Ketu) in the horoscopes of the prospective bride and groom. That’s the reason why people are suggested to take precaution before getting married. No one wants to take a step back when it comes to taking the important decision of your life, and everyone wants to lead a happy married life. Hence, these are some aspects that need to be carefully calculated to ensure that the couple leads a happy married life.
