Navratri lauds the spirit of triumph and vitality. The third day of Sharad Navratri 2017 would befall on the 23rd of September, 2017. Know how the goddess of righteousness, Maa Chandraghanta would bless your life with this Navratri!
The third day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Chandraghanta. The word ‘Chandraghanta’ can be divided into two words ‘chandra’ which means ‘the moon’, and ‘ghanta’, which translates to a hanging bell. Goddess Chandraghanta, who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati and flaunts her married avatar, got her name because of the placement of a bell shaped crescent moon on her forehead. She bears a fierce aura and is seen mount on a lion. Chandraghanta Devi is known to annihilate her foes and urges justness amongst people. It is believed that the planet Venus is governed by the alleged Goddess.
The avatar of Goddess Durga has a golden skin tone and has 10 arms. She carries a Trident (Trishul), a Mace (Gada), a Sword (Talwar) and a Water Vessel (Kamandal) in her four hands on the left side and holds a Lotus flower (Kamal), an Arrow (Baan), a Bow (Dhanush) and a Rudraksha Rosary (Rudraksha mala) in her four hands on the right side. She holds the Abhaya Mudra with her fifth hand on the right side and Varada Mudra with her fifth hand on the left side. She wears a garland of white flowers around her neck and is adorned with a bell shaped crescent moon on top of her head. She appears to be ready for decimating her enemies at any given moment. As per common belief, the sound created by the moon-bell placed on the forehead of Goddess Chandraghanta casts out the negativity away from her devotees.
When Lord Shiva gave his consent to marry Parvati and he visited King Himavan with his procession comprising of Aghoris, goblins, ghosts etc, then, mother of Parvati fainted as she was terrified on seeing such procession. Thus, in order to reconcile the situation, Parvati took the form of Chandraghanta and came before Lord Shiva. Then, after settling down the situations she very calmly asked Lord Shiva to get dressed like a groom. To this, Lord Shiva agreed and came in festooned himself with jewels that spellbinded Goddess Parvati’s family.
