Moon phases represent the lunar cycle which is considered to be very important when it comes to calculation of days and dates. The Moon Phases Calendar is used as a reference in many religious calendars whose festivals, cultural events and other activities are based on the visibility and movement of the Moon, such as the Islamic Calendar.
The Moon Phases Calendar begins with the day from the New Moon and follows the transitions wherein first, the size of the Moon keeps on increasing and then after the Full Moon, the size keeps on decreasing until it is a No Moon night. These phases are noted, and then the dates of the Moon Phases Calendar are derived. You can see the calendar for Moon Phases 2020 Calendar below and plan your year accordingly.

There is no significant beginning day/date/month when it comes to referring the Moon Phases Calendar, as every month, the same cycle keeps repeating itself. There are majorly 8 phases that occur in the lunar cycle and mark the completion of one lunar cycle in the Moon Phases Calendar. In the year 2020, on the first day of the year according to Gregorian Calendar, Moon will begin with its first quarter according to the lunar cycle.
Moon, in its different forms, completes the whole lunar cycle in a month. The Moon moves around its orbit and reflects eight different phases, with four aspects visible every week. This concludes one month in terms of the Gregorian Calendar and the dates mentioned above can be referred when describing the visibility of Moon phases for an easy correlation with other calendars as well.

One of the significant lunar calendars which use the visibility of Moon to determine its festivals, events and other religious activities is Islamic Calendar. A major festival celebrated in Islam is Eid, which is confirmed with the help of Moon Phases Calendar. Here are the most important phenomena and phases of the Moon which can be seen in a Moon Phase Calendar:
Blue Moon: This is a phenomenon where the Full Moon is observed more than once or twice a month, which is very rare. It is known to occur three times a year rather than the old information where the Blue Moon occurred four times in a season.
Black Moon: When two New Moons are occurring in the month of a Full Moon, the phenomenon of the Black Moon is believed to occur. The day of the Black Moon is also known as No Moon day, as Moon is not visible on this day and is considered as the darkest night. The phenomenon of the Black Moon is known to occur very rarely.
New Moon: With the beginning of the lunar cycle, the New Moon can be seen in the sky. As the Moon falls between the Earth and the Sun, a small arch like shape appears. The closer the Moon goes close to Sun, the more it illuminates due to the light of the Sun.
Full Moon: This is when the Moon can be seen as a whole sphere in the sky. The Moon gets posited on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. The Sun, Moon and Earth get aligned, causing it to come out as a Full Moon night. The alignment is not very precise as the Sun, Moon and Earth have different orbits, hence making it hard to see all the planets in a straight alignment. Although, when it does, it is a solstice.
First Quarter: When the Moon halfway completes its journey from the New Moon to the Full Moon, it is known to be the First Quarter of Moon. It is seen in a semi-circular shape. The size of the Moon increases till it reaches the Full Moon phase. It takes around half a fortnight to enter this phase.
Last or Third Quarter: This phase marks the part of the lunar cycle where the Moon has halfway completed its journey from the Full Moon to waning crescent. In this phase, the shape of the Moon seems semi-circular. This quarter is a part of the cycle where the size of the Moon keeps on decreasing.
Some other phases come between these significant phases. They are known as waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous and waning crescent. These four phases fall between the major aspects of the lunar cycle. They determine the position of the Moon from the Earth.
