According to Hindu calendar Amalaki Ekadashi takes place on the Ekadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the Hindu month of Phalgun. Like every Ekadashi, Amalaki Ekadashi is devoted to Lord Vishnu.

In ancient times, there lived a King named Chitrasen. People in his kingdom used to follow the day of Ekadashi with devout strictness. Everyone, including the King used to observe Vrat (fast) on Ekadashi Tithi. Once, King Chitrasen lost his way while hunting in the forest. That became critical for his fate.

He got attacked by wild tribes in the forest, but their weapons had no impact on Chitrasen. Seeing this, they were astonished and all of a sudden a large group of tribal men arrived. On persistent trials, the King fell down to ground and became unconscious. However, this brought an unseen fate for the tribal men. A divine light came out of his body and killed his attackers.

When the King became conscious, he was surprised to see each of his attackers dead. It was the effect of his devoted following of the day of Ekadashi that helped him to beat the odds. Since then, the day of Amalaki Ekadashi came into being.

It is a believed that God Vishnu resides in and near the Amla tree, who is the prime Lord to be worshiped on Amalaki Ekadashi. This makes the Amla tree so significant. The Amla tree is also worshiped due to its medicinal properties, if we take a look at it with a scientific approach.

Following are the rituals that are to be carried out on Amalaki Ekadashi :

  1. A fast or Vrat is observed from the dawn of Ekadashi to the dawn of next day (Dwadashi).
  2. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Amla tree on the day of Amalaki Ekadashi.
  3. During fast, Satvik food is consumed by the devotees. If one cannot fast for the whole day, he/she can also observe a fast for half day or a partial fast.
