Hence, if you wish to get your ancestors free from sins and want their souls to attain peace, do not miss out to observe the Indira Ekadashi fast.
If you are going to observe the Indira Ekadashi fast, do follow all the rituals to please Lord Vishnu, to get his blessings. Let’s take a look at the rituals of the day of Indira Ekadasi, so that the Indira Ekadasi Vrat gives you maximum benefits.
As the part of the rituals of this Ekadashi, the rituals should be started from a day before Indira Ekadasi i.e. from the day of Dashami (the tenth day of the Hindu month). The devotees offer prayer and perform holy rituals for the dead ancestors on Dashami. Meal is also taken on the day of Dashami, as on the day of Indira Ekadasi, a full-day fast is kept.
Some people perform the Shraddh rituals on the day of Indira Ekadashi rather than on the day of Dashami. The devotees keep awake, the whole night and sing devotional songs and chant Mantra to honor Lord Vishnu. The Vrat is then broken on the day of Dwadashi (the twelfth of Hindu month), the next day of Indira Ekadasi. The food prepared should be offered to the priests and to the cows, as well. After offering the food, the devotee then takes food along with the family members.
As per the legend, there was a ruler named, Indrasen who ruled the city, Mahishmati. He had a happy family, having sons and grandsons, too. He was a wealthy and a glorious ruler who always used to defeat his enemies. One day, while the king was sitting in his court, Maharishi Narada came to the court. King became pleased at his arrival and welcomed him.
Maharishi Narada became happy by the king’s welcome and told him that once when he went to the Yamlok, he saw his father in Yamlok. King’s father was a generous person, but he missed some of the Ekadashi fasts that resulted in taking him to hell. Hence, Maharshi Narada told the King that his father had given a message for him to observe the Indira Ekadasi fast.
The king asked Maharishi Narad about the procedure of observing the Indira Ekadashi fast. He observed the Vrat as told by Narada Muni. Along with this, he followed all the rituals of Shraddh for his father and this way, the soul of King’s father attained salvation and reached heaven, leaving the hell.
