The day of Mohini Ekadashi is observed during Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Vaisakha. The ritual of Mohini Ekadashi is followed in South India in the Tamil month of Chithirai and in Jyeshta Maas of Bengali calendar.

Mohini Ekadashi : Why To Observe Mohini Ekadashi?

The legend is about son of Dhanapala, Dhristabuddhi. Dhanapala was an ardent Lord Vishnu’s devotee, but his son was just the reverse of his character. Dhanapala was a rich merchant, residing along the banks of Saraswati. He spent his whole life in charity and benevolent deeds, although his son proved to be big disappointment for him.

Dhristabuddhi was abandoned by his father due to his bad associations and misdeeds. This did not change him much and he resorted himself to robbery, in order to sustain his life. To quench his hunger, Dhristabuddhi also started killing up animals in forests. Thus, he was able to satiate his starvation after being thrown out of the house.

After a certain point of time, he felt to be guilty as he realized his ill deeds. Thus, one day he arrived at the Ashram of Kaundinya, a sage. This proved to be the turning point in his life. As Dhristabuddhi tried to annul his guilts, Kaundinya advised him to observe Ekadashi Vrat in the month of Vaisakha to honor Lord Vishnu.

It is believed that after observing the Ekadashi Vrat, he was able to purify his past life sins and attained Moksha (salvation). Since then, the day of Mohini Ekadashi came to be devoted to Vishnu.

  • On the day of Ekadashi, devotees should wake up before sunrise.
  • A spiritual bath is taken at a river or lake. A paste of Kush and Til is used in bathing.
  • Only Satvik food is taken by the devotees who observe the Vrat.
