Once, there was a sage named Medhavi. He was a devotee of Lord Shiva and resided in a forest called Chittaratha. Medhavi was well known for his meditation practices, which could not be interrupted even after alluring distractions. However, Manju Ghosha, a damsel was successful in doing so.

Manju built a hut near the sage’s house and began on her attempts to distract sage Medhavi. One day, while Medhavi was meditating, Manju started singing songs that reached the ears of Medhavi. He halted his Tapa (meditation) and went out in search for the source of the voice. On seeing the gracious beauty of Manju, he was both astonished and contented. Eventually, they married each other and lived together for a few years.

After a few years had passed, Manju left the sage. It was then when Medhavi realized that he had been tricked by the sense of lust. In response of her betrayal, Medhavi turned Manju into a witch and left everything behind to consult his father, sage Chyavana.

His father advised him to observe the fast of Papamochani Ekadashi to get relieved of the past sins. As advised, Medhavi followed the Ekadashi Vrat and was able to pay a repentance to his past guilts. It is also believed that Manju regained her human form after performing the Vrat of Papamochani Ekadashi. Since then, the day of Papamochani Ekadashi is observed by all the devotees to eradicate the sins of their life.
