Surya Grahan or Solar eclipse is a natural phenomenon, which occurs at least two to five times in a year. Surya Grahan takes place when Moon comes in between Sun and earth. This happens only on the new Moon day, when Sun, Moon, and earth come in a straight line after breaking the limitations of their orbital angles.
There are four types of Solar eclipses or Surya Grahan. The likelihood of happening of these Surya Grahan is different for different types. Let's talk about them, and also about the types of solar eclipse that earth will witness in 2016, in detail.
The four kinds of Surya Grahan are : partial solar eclipse, annular solar eclipse, total solar eclipse, and hybrid solar eclipse.
Partial solar eclipse (Anshik Surya Grahan) : This is the most common type of Surya Grahan, which is seen the maximum number of times. It occurs when only a part of Sun is covered by Moon. It seems like a part of Sun is swallowed up by the Moon.
Partial solar eclipse can be seen from those places only, which comes under the effect of penumbral shadow of Moon.
Annular solar eclipse (Kundalakaar/Kankanakriti/Kankan Surya Grahan): The name of this eclipse is derived from the Latin word ‘annulus’ meaning ring. Therefore, Annular solar eclipse is also called ring shaped solar eclipse. Annular solar eclipse occurs when earth, Sun, and Moon come in a perfectly straight line. In this kind of eclipse, Moon won't be able to cover the Sun entirely, because of its small size and also because it is quite far from earth. Only the center part of Sun is covered by Moon, which leads to the appearance of a ring or circle around the Moon.
Total solar eclipse (Purna Surya Grahan) : Total solar eclipse or the most awaited solar eclipse by the scientists, occurs when Sun is completely covered by Moon. This happens when Sun, Moon, and earth come in a straight line and also, when Moon is quite close to earth. During this eclipse, the entire Sun is covered by the umbral shadow of Moon.
In total solar eclipse, one gets to see a very rare view and covers only 1% or less area of the entire earth. It also holds only for a very few minutes, i.e. around 7.5 mins.
Hybrid solar eclipse (Sankarit Surya Grahan) : Hybrid solar eclipse, also known as Sankarit Surya Grahan, is a rare event. Sankarit Surya Grahan occurs, when it appears as an annular solar eclipse from a certain part of earth and at the same time, it appears as total solar eclipse from some different part of earth. The duration of hybrid solar eclipse is very short.
These were the types of solar eclipses (Surya Grahan).

After knowing the types of Surya Grahan in 2016, let's now talk about the legend of Surya Grahan, so that you will also get to understand the historical reason for occurrence of solar eclipse, every year and in 2016.
During the time of Samudra Manthan (churning of ocean), when the divine nectar (Amrit) came out, the gods wanted to ensure that no demon would be able to consume it. To accomplish the same, Lord Vishnu tricked and disguised himself into a beautiful lady named 'Mohini'.
She offered Amrit to all the gods and a simple liquid to all the demons. But a demon named as RahuKetu, understood the trick. He quietly sat among the gods, in between Sun and Moon, in order to consume Amrit.
When RahuKetu was consuming Amrit, he was recognized by Sun and Moon. They informed Lord Vishnu about the demon and Lord Vishnu, immediately cut down his head with his Sudarshan Chakra. As some amount of Amrit was already consumed by RahuKetu, he became immortal. Since then, his head is known as Rahu and his body is known as Ketu.
RahuKetu believes that Sun and Moon are responsible for his condition. Thus, it is believed that, he comes on earth time to time to engulf Sun. That day is termed as Surya Grahan or solar eclipse.
For this reason only, temples are also remain closed during the time of Surya Grahan, to save the deities from the evil powers of Rahu. Temples will again remain closed during Surya Grahan in 2016.
